Labor-Only Disclaimer

I offer labor-only installation at $100 per axle for customers supplying their own parts.

  1. Years ago, when I was a shop foreman, we bought parts from a local store. The counter girl—Carol, redhead—was actually the **mistress** of one of my techs. He was freshly married. His backstory was wild: he’d spent about 13 years in max security, got out, his wife was surprisingly understanding, and eventually she was pregnant with twins. He told me he hadn’t been around women in years and he “just needed women.” Carol would even go hang out with the wife and help. Weird triangle, but it worked for them, I guess.

One day I decided to mess with Carol. I called the store and, deadpan, said, “Hey, Karen, can you bring me a bottle of **synthetic horn fluid**?”

She said, “Sure,” and hung up.

Next thing I know, she shows up in the parts truck absolutely fuming. She’d walked the store for **45 minutes** looking for that crap. When she finally asked her coworkers, they started laughing.

I apologized (eventually). We all laughed about it later, and “synthetic horn fluid” has been a shop legend ever since.

  2. Years ago, when I was working at a muffler shop, a young-sounding woman called and asked, “How much for a muffler for my car?”

I said, “What kind of car do you have?”

She goes, “I don’t know. It’s just a little pretty red car.”

I said, “That’s all you got?”

    “Yeah.”

“Well, then it could be anywhere between $40 and $1,500—depends what kind of car it is.”

And that was the end of that conversation.

  3. Years ago I was standing in the office at the muffler shop where I worked. My boss’s name was Phil, my name is Philip, and across the street at the sandwich shop there was a father and son—both named Philip. One afternoon all four of us were in the office talking when a guy walks in and says, “Hey, Phil.”

All four of us turn in unison and go, “What?”

He just stared in amazement… and walked right back out. I said, “Yeah, we’re all Phil.” Then the door closed and that was that.
